Can you make a living doing what you love? Yes, here’s how you do it
Lots of entrepreneurs, artists, and athletes are familiar with this issue, they simply don’t know if they must follow their passion or play it safe. I certainly have been there, below you’ll find 3 must-haves to make the most of your passion…
Is following my passion the way to financial success, or should I keep them seperated?
A famous American football player was suprised by this question during an interview last year, and his answer surprised me even more.
The player answered that he felt like he had to choose between American football and baseball since he was very skilled at both sports at a young age. His parents were supportive, but they strongly believed (like many do)that you cannot follow your passion and become wealthy, but is that true?
He made the choice to follow his passion for American football but always kept a realistic view of his abilities to earn money by playing. His choice was fueled by the potentially bigger paycheck in football. But he make sure to always ask himself “How do I sell my passion?”
In some industries you might be able to combine your passion and big money, but for most people this is not an option. But how do some people seem to do exactly this?
3 things to understand about making a profit from your passion
We all have something (or more things for that matter) that we are very passionate about, this can be that thing you do in your spare time for example. But it takes something extra to follow your passion and make money doing so.
Understand the following three things to make money following your passion:
1. Make sure you’re accually good at it
Try not to loose track of reality. Are you really willing to put in A LOT of hard work until you are the BEST at what you do?
Lots of people simply wil say ‘NO,’ they kind of hope things to just magically happen without effort. But the truth if ofter different.
After you found something you are good at, make a plan on how you can use this passion. Ask yourself: How can I use my passion to help others?
Perhaps you are passionated about playing the guitar, are you skilled enough to teach other people? Perhaps you have an idea on how to make the existing market better and teach people in online classes or create an online course.
I will use myself as an example:
Since 2016, I translate and/or write content for multinational companies. A big part of me loves writing/translating since I know how the internals behind international marketing (I studied international business). Another part of me likes it because I love to help people, which can be seen in the fact that I worked as an technical support manager during my study. After that, I worked three years in the army where, amongst other things, I learned how to handle diverse projects and tight deadlines.
These three factors all combined in my freelance career, as I found way to profit from my passion(s). I realised that these three factors are unique to me, and will produce unique results. So I improved on how I serve my clients and here we are!
2. Make a good monetization plan
You need a plan to make money, it’s that simple. But what are some ways you can make money? Below I listed some options for you that serve as some examples. Feel free to add any below in the comments!
- You can sell a physical product, think of jewelry, clothes or home-made furniture. You can sell these products online or in store in your city, or even both.
- Writing about your passion is also a good way, think about writing books or making videos. Affiliate links are a good option for extra income. Memberships are growing in popularity these days and make for good living. There are some Youtube channels where people simply review toys. They’re are now earning more than $1.4 million and have millions of subsribers!
- Give people an easier life by thinking of ways to help them. You can help business-owners by automating certain task in Microsoft Excel for example. Save them some (or a lot!) time by letting the software do these long and repetitife tasks every week or month.
- Work as a consultant and get people closer to their goals.
3. Don’t fear improvement
Malcolm Gladwell is a famous author from Canada who once described what is needed to become a master at anything. He said in one of his books that it takes on average 10.000 hours to really master a skill.
When you really think of it, it seems like an aweful lot of hours! But try to break it up in smaller pieces. Think of it on a weekly basis, how many hours do you need to practise this skill in order to work on it for a total of 10.000 hours?
Would it take you 6 months? Or perhaps less?
Most of us know the saying ‘Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.’
But is there a truth in it for you, or are they just some words to make you feel better?
Many variables need to be considered whilst answering this question, and the truth is that the answer depends on your specific situation and personality.
The only logical outcome from the above is that each person has to come up with an answer that will fit only their specific situation. You and me may look different towards things like satisfaction in your job and salary.
The things that make you happy might be very different to mine, and that is ok, but it makes finding an answer to the title of article harder.
I recommend you read this article again, and implement to things I mentioned, and come up with a plan. No matter the answers you’ll find, it will help you find peace in the path you take. It will help you create that balance between passion and income.
Do you know of things that also need to be considered when answering the above questions? If so, please leave a comment below and help eachother. I will highly appreciate it!
Thanks for taking some time of your day and read this article:)
